The ENABLE project reaches the half-way mark: Activities and achievement to date

The ENABLE project aims to build capacity to enable staff in ministries, regional and local government to identify appropriate and cost effective ways in which renewable energy technologies can integrate with existing energy generation technologies to contribute towards the MDGs. Tools to aid decision-makers are being developed and training is being provided in cross-sectoral linkages between energy, health, education and water supply, to assist key staff in successfully managing existing programmes and recognising where renewable energy can help to meet sectoral goals. Awareness of relevant networks and organisations is also being raised through national and regional workshops, which will assist in the initiation of additional projects in the future.

Report from Regional Energy Scale-up Workshop

From the 13th to the 15th March 2006, the ENABLE team together with UNDP facilitated a three day consultative workshop hosted by the East African Community. The principal objective of this workshop was to facilitate the design of a regional energy access workplan and accompanying investment programmes to support the achievement of the millennium development goals.

11th Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the EAC

The Eleventh Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the East African Community was held in Arusha on 3 April 2006. In the meeting the Ministers urged the Partner States to develop a strategy for accelerated provision of sustainable modern energy services to the rural, urban and peri-urban poor, to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), within the framework of High Impact Low Cost Scalable (HILCS).
